(First Steps)

Our life skills programme is the first of three stages our trainees can access. It lays the foundations of confidence and self esteem so all of our learners feel empowered to move into a working environment.

Course outline

Many of our learners have very low self esteem and confidence when they start Steps due to their previous educational experience. Our first objective is to change that by providing a safe, open environment. We orientate the first month around setting accessible tasks as we know learners are unlikely to progress if they don’t believe in their own ability to do so.

NOTE:  As each learner is an individual and may progress quicker or benefit from more time, we don’t restrict our programmes by age.

Our life skills programme covers:

  • Functional numeracy and literacy (everyday skills)
  • UK qualifications from ASDAN, a portfolio based (no exams or coursework) curriculum which we adapt to each trainee’s interests
  • Social and emotional wellbeing (self-esteem, confidence, self-advocacy building, understanding and managing emotions)
  • Teamwork, communication skills, problem solving skills, social interaction
  • Mentorship from trainees in the Preparation for the Future Programme.

The learning environment

We follow a typical school day, but with smaller class sizes (maximum 5-8 learners depending on the session). Our specialists take a hands on role within the learning sessions.

We’ll take the time to get to know the interests and abilities of your family member, then structure their work around those areas to maximise engagement and motivation. Once we’ve established a trusting relationship with them, we’ll work on the things they find harder.

Our other programmes

16-18: Preparation for the Future Programme (Next Steps)
On this programme we’ll start introducing your child to practical working environments. They may prepare food in our coffee shops, work in our business services centre, or do work experience with a Steps business partner. They can complete ASDAN qualifications or start a BTEC.
18 and up: Transition to Employment (Future Steps)
Our transition programme will focus on employability. Your child may attend mock interviews and make their CV. They may start an internship with a Steps business partner. They will complete any ASDAN or BTEC qualifications they’re working on.
